The Barossa is home to some of the world’s oldest ungrafted Shiraz vines. The vines were planted in a pre-mechanized and pre-irrigation era where site selection was everything. Dry grown as bush vines with only the best soils, vine material and sites surviving the first years, and only the absolute pinnacle surviving the 100 years thereafter.
The low-yielding ‘Centenarian’ vines, noted for their intensity of flavour, were planted more than a century ago around the time construction of the Château itself began. The select parcels are hand-picked and fermented in small open fermenters with hand plunging four times daily before careful basket pressing to more gently extract tannin and colour.

Gracious and powerful at once, the wine shows dark fruit richness, warm spice, dried flower, toasty oak and dark chocolate characters on the nose, followed by a voluptuous palate that’s filled with complex flavours and velvety texture. It’s expansive and plush with seamlessly woven tannins, making it superbly structured and harmonious. At its best: now to 2042.

An exceptional example of old vine Barossa Shiraz sourced from a vineyard in the northern part of the region. The striking feature is the velvety smooth palate displaying the soft and supple fruit qualities in a way that conceals the power and drive. It has been made in largely traditional ways with small open fermenters and gentle basket pressing all designed to gently coax the best from these old vines. Rich textured and plush. This is an utterly entrancing Barossa Shiraz. A black maroon hue. Serious concentration here, this is generous, even sumptuous. Plush, with chocolate, leather, mocha and coffee beans. Seamless, intense and with impressive length. Fine, silky tannins, good energy and bright acidity. Love it and no doubt anyone opening a bottle over the next fifteen to twenty years will do so as well. There really is something in old vines.

Deep ruby and purple colours in the glass. Mulberry, charred beef and rosemary aromatics. Powerful and focused with ripe blue and purple fruits that meld seamlessly with charry meat and dried herbs. It is firmly framed by dense and powerfully grainy tannins that ensure it drives very long and has tension throughout the line. Cellaring will be very well rewarded.

Shiraz sourced from two vineyards with an average age of 120 years in Nuriootpa and Vine Vale; aged for 24 months in French and American oak (20% new). Deep crimson in the glass and bursting with choc-berry fruits, dark plum and mulberry notes underscored with layers of baking spice, licorice, cedar, vanillin oak and earth. Graceful with an elegant mouthfeel, plentiful tight tannins and a minerally acid cadence on its extended finish. Drink by 2033

Sets out to impress with some serious old vine magic on show. The Centenarians contribute deeply concentrated, complex fruit. Opens in heady aromas of dark satsuma plum, black fruits, pan forte, aniseed, baking spices, earth and olive tapenade, wedded to lashings of expensive French oak. What a luxurious entrance! The style is now well set. The wine moves with confidence, building in power and presence as we have seen in previous releases. Although it is sourced from a warm vintage in 2020, tannins hold firm throughout. There is structure but also plenty of life and energy. Feeds into a style very much associated with the Barossa Valley, living large and unapologetically opulent and textural with plenty of detail. Will age a treat. Drink by: 2024-2043

The 2020 100 Year Old Vines Shiraz is concentrated and tight in the mouth. The acidity is pronounced, but the fruit is balanced and powerful, and it absorbs the acidity (and oak) beautifully. This clearly needs a decant: the fruit is coiled and compressed in the mouth, but the length of flavor certainly assures us that it has much more to give than it is currently giving. This is very good, graceful in its way. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. 2023-2035
