Terroirs of the Barossa ‘Eden Valley’ Shiraz 2022

$60.00 / bottle

WINEMAKING

Terroirs of the Barossa Eden Valley Shiraz is a wonderful cool climate expression of Barossa Shiraz. To ensure the unique character of this sub-region is exemplified in the wine, small open fermenters and our basket press were employed to gently extract the wine.

Ageing in the finest quality new and seasoned French oak barrels has created a wine that respects and expresses its place of origin

Terroir: The combined effects of site soil and climate on the vine. The  Barossa has some very distinct sub-regions which exhibit their own unique influence on the wine. A journey through the Terroirs is a lesson in the Barossa’s versatility. We have chosen Eden Valley to highlight its rich, darker flavours unique to this high altitude,  cooler climate and rocky, clay loam soils.

Soil: red-grey loams with slate and granite

Altitude: 400m

TASTING NOTES

The wine reflects the slate and granite soils with strong mineral notes, and fruit flavours of blackberry, Morello cherry. Complex deeper notes of earth and cured meats bring the palate to a long and evenly weighted finish.

Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot

A smooth and sumptuously presented Shiraz from Eden Valley, it explodes with aromas of dark plum, blackberry and a trace of cherry liquor. The highly perfumed nose leads into a generously rich palate with its black fruit dominance. A mighty impressive wine. Drink by: 2024-2039

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

Offering fabulous fruit purity and elegant complexity, the wine shows dark cherry, sweet plum, violet, toasty oak and mixed spice aromas on the nose. The palate is equally satisfying with ripe fruit intensity combined with supple texture and finely infused tannins, finishing long and structured. At its best: now to 2039.

Eden Valley provides the fruit for this Shiraz, which is matured for a year and a half in a mix of new and older French oak (70%) with the remainder in American oak barrels.
The colour here is a near opaque maroon. The nose has aromas of spices, redcurrants, mulberries, mocha, chocolate, cassis and plums. Ever-so-fine tannins, the wine has impressive balance and length, with intensity running the full journey. A lingering finish. Should drink superbly for the next eight to twelve years.

Medium-deep crimson. Intense blackberry, dark liquorice aromas with roasted walnut notes. Inky deep wine with pure blackberry, hint tobacco, aniseed flavours and fine slinky textures. Voluminous with ample fruit sweetness and vigour. Black liquorice at the finish. Touch sweet. Drink now–2032

Huon Hooke, The Real Review

Deep colour and rich, superripe, sweet blackberry conserve bouquet, hints of star anise, licorice and cola. Big and chewy with slight tannin bitterness which adds to the cleansing effect on the finish. Some alcohol warmth. Firm, forceful finish: a rich wine with obvious cellaring potential.

Lots to like here in this 2022 Eden Valley Shiraz bursting with fruit pastille, blackcurrant and blackberry topped by licorice allsorts and black pepper. Great impact of blackberry and vanilla oak with a slightly savoury edge to follow driving through to a long, supple finish. Great energy with integrated chalky tannins likely to offer moderate aging potential. Drink by: 2027-2035
