Matthews Road Shiraz
Our Matthews Road wines showcase all the classic varietal characters of great Australian Shiraz.
Tasting Notes
This wine displays lifted aromas of blackberry, blueberry and white pepper supported by classic cool climate Shiraz characters of spicy, dark berry fruits on the palate.
The extensive finish is framed by elegant, fine-grained tannins from sixteen months’ maturation in a combination of new and seasoned American and French oak barrels.
Winemaking
Fruit for the Matthews Road Shiraz comes from the cool climate, high altitude of the Barossa’s Eden Valley sub-region.
The grapes are destemmed, but not crushed, and spend seven days fermenting on their skins in open fermenters for more control of each single parcel of grapes. We undertake hand plunging at least twice daily during ferment to more gently extract colour, flavours and tannins.
The wine is then carefully basket-pressed for a more gentle extraction, and softer mouthfeel to the finished wine. It then undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels, before being transferred to a selection of new and seasoned French and American oak to mature for 16 months.
